Dairy Nutrient Management Planning
King County has 33 licensed dairies, nestled mostly on the Enumclaw Plateau and in the Snoqualmie Valley area, with an average herd size of 237 cows. The King Conservation District works closely with these dairies to help them meet all the requirements of the Dairy Nutrient Management Act of 1998. The technical assistance provided to the dairies by the King Conservation District is funded by a grant from the Washington State Conservation Commission. The Commission has also provided cost-share funding to dairy farmers to help implement some of the practices detailed in their Dairy Nutrient Management Plans. In recent years, the majority of cost-share funding has been allocated to dairy farmers installing manure storage facilities. The installation of these facilities not only helps protect water quality in the Snoqualmie Valley and Enumclaw Plateau, it also helps agriculture and the family farm to remain viable in King County.
