Safer Grass Expo

The King and Snohomish Conservation Districts co-sponsored two workshops with Katy Watts, a Colorado-based researcher who has been studying the effects of sugars and non-structural carbohydrates on horse health. The workshops were held in April of 2007. The first workshop was targeted towards veterinarians, agency staff, farriers and other equine industry professionals. The second workshop was targeted towards horse owners, trainers and hay producers.

These workshops addressed the factors affecting sugar content in forage plants and management of sugar (carbohydrate) intolerant horses and explored management practices to reduce sugars in forages and hays. These management practices included grass selection, grazing practices, soil fertility management, hay testing, feed selection and treatments and more.
