Meet the Candidates

Teri Herrera, Redmond

My 18 years of experience as a Realtor® has given me a broad base of knowledge in all aspects of land use and land use issues. Sensitive areas, setbacks, wetlands and other land use restrictions are a common concern of homeownership. My ability to provide solutions to balance the preservation of our natural environment without fear of losing our freedoms to enjoy individual property rights is my passion. Since 1949 the KCD has provided citizens with the tools to become better stewards of our natural resources. Education, technical assistance, project support and cost share are at the core of the District’s principles. Sixty one years ago it was impossible to predict the challenges we face today in balancing our property rights with preserving our natural environment. The difficulties we face today are to provide clean, healthy water and nutritious, fresh food for our families. There has never been a more critical time for communities to come together to find solutions to these issues.

OBJECTIVE

My goal is to raise awareness of the District and its resources and to partner with urban and suburban organizations, corporations, and coalitions to provide the necessary tools to develop grants, cost share programs, technical expertise and educational programs designed specifically towards these needs. Community pea patch programs, rainwater collection, organic gardening and pest control, environmentally friendly landscapes/hardscapes and the restoration of urban/suburban creeks and streams are only a few areas for which the District can provide expertise. I would work with the District to create a bridge between our rural community and our urban/suburban communities with regards to a sustainable food system. Through the support of food link organizations, restaurants, farmers markets, school cafeterias and local/specialty grocery stores, our rural neighbors offer a wealth of technical knowledge and fresh food sources that are vastly underutilized. I would work with the District to better communicate with the citizens of King County through a more interactive web presence, KCD landowner information kits, community forums, workshops and urban/farm tours.

My experience as a Realtor® has taught me much about negotiation. What I have learned is that the true art of negotiation is ones ability to listen. KCD serves a county with varied interests and needs and offers the necessary resources to bring the urban, suburban and rural communities together. I look forward to becoming part of the KCD and the synergy it provides.
